This has been an eventful few days.

I spent last week hitting the books in preparation for my Texas Life, Accident and Health Insurance Agent license test. It being nearly two years since I last did any serious studying, last week was not a pleasant time. The work paid off, however, and I passed the test on Friday. I’ll be getting my license as soon as the State Department of Insurance processes the relevant paperwork. Hopefully they work a bit more quickly than the DOHS.

Speaking of which, guess what finally arrived in the mail today! I am now able to fully comply with the instructions that are laid upon all Permanent Residents, and you can bet I’ll be carrying my card - which features all the correct personal details - with me at all times from now on. Yes siree, my new flexible friend will be sleeping under my pillow at night. Ahem.

The US government at least has a half-decent reason for making me carry ID. No such good reason exists for the British government to make the Queen’s subjects do so. Yet Home Secretary Charles Clarke wants just such a card in the pocket of every law-abiding citizen. Why? It’ll keep people safer. But not so safe that it’ll prevent things like bombs exploding in the Tube. So if it won’t actually keep people safe, then why? Pick a problem, ID cards are the solution! They are a plastic panacaea for the problems of our populace!

Of course, not even such a lovely panacaea is effective at getting rid of such irritations as the common cold, an excellent specimin of which took up residence in my respiratory system on Friday. I do believe it’s time for another swig of Vicks 44.
