The UK and the US have moved things into the diplomatic endgame with the presentation of one more UN resolution. This is really the last chance- not so much for Saddam, since he’s proven time and time again that he’s rooted deeper than toothless diplomacy can dig, but for the UN itself. If this resolution fails to pass- and there is a reasonable likelihood that this will be the case, with only 4 out of the 15 Security Council members currently in favour and at least 5 actively against- then it will prove once and for all that the UN is a neutered institution and toothless diplomacy is all that it is capable of. America and England are going into Iraq. It’s now up to the UN in general and France, Germany and Old Europe in particular to decide whether they want to come to the party and watch everyone else dance, or stay at home and wonder why they never received invitations in the first place.
